Realizing Location-Based Push-Services on Mobile Devices

This paper describes how location-based push-services can be realized on mobile devices. Such services allow to automatically deliver locationrelevant information to mobile users, thus enabling new application scenarios. The paper presents examples of these new application scenarios and introduces a generic software architecture, which allows to integrate arbitrary ways of tracking the user’s location. Then it describes a reference implementation of the architecture using Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME), a Palm handheld and a GSM phone. The prototype tracks the location by evaluating location information available in the German o2 GSM network, where every base station broadcasts its location via GSM cell broadcast messages. In a city like Munich this allows a tracking accuracy of 297,5 meters on average.
